Family tickets are £15 each and give entry for 4 including a maximum of 2 adults

BOOK NOW

In this event, Eileen will share the folk stories and songs that combine with our local language and heritage. Stories such as the mermaid whose song changes the colour of the moon; dragons with a love of rhyme; ogres enraged by one word; Kelpies outsmarted with song. In this event we invite you to listen to the spell songs that breathe life and enchantment into our folklore and traditions and to rediscover how our mythical heritage and Brechin dialect words are woven throughout our local stories of Brunties, Quheilwrichts and horsefish*. Booking essential.

(*Bruntie: Blacksmith; Quheilwricht: wheelwright;  horsefish: stickleback)

For Schools

Thanks to a Live Literature award from the Scottish Book Trust - a Scotland-wide programme that helps fund and support author events in communities all over the country - we are thrilled to present our first  programme for Primary School age children and their families.

Brechin has a long and varied history, stretching all the way back into the Bronze Age and beyond. All the different people who have made Brechin their home throughout this long history have helped to contribute to our local myths and language.  Although many are familiar with the Doric dialect of Scots Language, fewer know of the Angus and Mearns dialect, even fewer are aware of the Scots words unique to Brechin! The Finding Words programme brings storyteller Eileen Budd into Brechin’s schools and culminates in a family show in Brechin Cathedral.

Across a 2-week period, Eileen will work with local Primary Schools (details tbc) to:

  • Share history through storytelling and object handling
  • Explore words in Scottish Folk Tradition, culture and         folklore
  • Record words, phrases, rhymes children have collected
  • Create a local sound archive of words being spoken and their definitions through sound recording with a word wall display in each school.
