Storyteller, Eileen budd

Listen and imagine in the historic surroundings of Brechin Cathedral

Author and Storyteller Eileen Budd, specialises in Scottish Folklore and Folk Traditions.  She continues her family’s storytelling tradition, by travelling Scotland sharing folktales and ancient legends. Nominated for Scots Language Performer of the Year in 2025; Eileen’s stories are featured on BBC Stories in Scots; and her storytelling work has been featured in Vogue.

Brechin has a long and varied history, stretching all the way back into the Bronze Age and beyond. All the different people who have made Brechin their home throughout this long history have helped to contribute to our local myths and language.  Although many are familiar with the Doric dialect of Scots Language, fewer know of the Angus and Mearns dialect, even fewer are aware of the Scots words unique to Brechin!

The storyteller will be working with the local community to share and rediscover some of these unique words and phrases in order to bring you this magical live storytelling experience.

In this event,  Eileen will share the folk stories and songs that combine with our local language and heritage. Stories such as the mermaid whose song changes the colour of the moon; dragons with a love of rhyme; ogres enraged by one word; Kelpies outsmarted with song. In this event we invite you to listen to the spell songs that breathe life and enchantment into our folklore and traditions and to rediscover how our mythical heritage and Brechin dialect words are woven throughout our local stories of Brunties, Quheilwrichts and horsefish*.
